Buzz Alert: Ex Reyes bring their inspired psych-soul to Union Pool on 12.09

There's a couple of ways that you could try to label NYC-based group Ex Reyes, but maybe the tag that really sums it up is one they've already laid claim to: "future nostalgia" (something similar was said of French band Air's debut album 'Moon Safari'). Ex Reyes, the project of Mikey Hart (Bleachers, The Cranberries, Santigold) is a genre-bending mix of soul-psych--melding Motown vibes, Beach Boys innovation, creamy falsettos and swirling synths to create mid-60's music from the 21st century. The sound is like a sock hop populated by robots, or maybe a reflection of Hart's New York--a city defined by its history, but never separated from the hum of moderniztion. Check out Ex Reyes's Do Something EP here, listen to single 'Bad Timing below, and don't miss the upcoming live show at Union Pool on December 9th. - Olivia Sisinni

Electro-soul NYC trio JIL plays Mercury Lounge on 12/2

Despite a number of high-profile perfomances with the likes of Pusha T and Dev Hynes, electro-RnB act JIL have kept a relatively low profile up until now. With a lack of information out there about them, the trio has let the three tracks released to date do all the talking - and they certainly have lots to "say." The band's sound is a head-bopping mix of distorted synths and guitars, booming percussion and the soulful, pristine vocals of their anonymous singer. Latest single "All Your Words," (streaming) sounds like a dark, tempestous sea thrashing about, while unexpectedly serene vocals seem to offer safe haven above its rough waves — and a vantage point to stare at the chaos below. JIL can't release new material soon enough. Maybe you can hear some when they take the Mercury Lounge's stage on 12/2. — Henry Solotaroff-Webber

A.M. Mills Grapples With Heartache at Ortlieb's Nov. 30

After originally learning about a full-length album being in the works with the help of Terry Yerves and Quentin Stoltzfus (Light Heat, ex-Mazarin) about a year ago, A.M. Mills, led by Drew Mills of Blood Feathers, has finally shared not an LP, as expected, but a six-song EP, simply titled First Recordings. Its introspective narrative finds Mills wandering over Dylan-esque musical terrain as he grapples with heartache and the ghost of a lost love. It's a cathartic release, and A.M. Mills will be sorting through this collection of songs/feelings and more this evening at Ortlieb's. They'll also be be joined by August Wells, the collaborative project from Ken Griffin (Rollerskate Skinny, Kid Silver, Favourite Sons) and John Rauchenberger, and local Philebrity singer-songwriter Joey Sweeney. Ortlieb's, 847 N. 3rd St., 8pm, $10, 21+ - H.M. Kauffman

Edgy, all NYC bill at Rough Trade on 12.11: Iris Lune, Arthur Moon & Nozart

Born in Boston as the project of singer-songwriter Ella Joy Meir and guitarist and composer Asher Kurtz, Iris Lune is now a Brooklyn based quartet, and plays expansive, mellow pop with ambient influences and jazzy inclinations. In single 'Triplets' (video streaming below) the band utilizes atmospheric vocal samples and electric piano to create a fluid drone on which Ella's mellow vocals float adrift. Iris Lune will be performing at Rough Trade on December 11 with two other interesting and like-minded local acts: Arthur Moon and Nozart.

Really Big Pinecone releases sophomore LP 'What I Said About The Pinecone'

We somehow missed the excellent, almost self titled debut record by Brooklynites Really Big Pinecone, released in early 2015: it's a math flavored psych-pop gem that made the Rolling Stone list of 15 Great Albums You Didn't Hear in 2015. The group, which would be an ideal touring companion for Deli NYC favorites Celestial Shore, just released their sophomore album 'What I Said About The Pinecone.' The record, while being thoroughly enjoyable, fulfils the band's promise to deliver music that's "messy, but playful, abstract, as well as earnest and joyful." Check out single W.I.S.A.T.P. below, and follow the band's bandcamp profile for updates about upcoming shows.
