Brooklyn Juiceboxxx debuts big-beat fueled hip hop with 'Freaking Out' + plays Secret Project Robot on 05.24

Music lovers who were sonically aware in the late '90s and early aughts will find a lot to like in Juiceboxxx's debut single 'Freaking Out' (streaming). The tune somehow manages to incorporate in one single track some of the most mind blowing music of that era, from Beck's quirky-yet-groovy production style to the punchy and synthetic big beat of The Chemical Brothers, while adopting a tense rapping style in part reminiscent of The Beastie Boys.

The track is "about hitting brick walls and fucking everything up but despite it all staying the course and trying to change your life in a positive way." Juiceboxxx's debut album 'Freaked Out American Loser' will be out 7/28 on Dangerbird Records, and you can catch the man live on May 24th at The New Secret Project Robot Space on 1186 Broadway in Brooklyn.

New Track: "Just Can't Get Enough" - Sheer Mag

Sheer Mag just announced that their highly-anticipated debut full-length album, Need To Feel Your Love, will be released on July 14 via Static Shock Records. Its debut single, “Just Can’t Get Enough,” combines soulfully, unabashed vocals with quick charges of weaving guitar. That precisely threaded juxtaposition of raw refinement is exactly what you need to get over this hump day. Sheer Mag will be headlining the First Unitarian Church this Saturday, May 13 with support from Marge, Weed, and Bugg.

New Video: "Yr Undertaker" (Live) - Shannen Moser

Singer-songwriter Shannen Moser is getting a vinyl release for her latest LP Oh, My Heart, due out June 16 via Lame-O Records. To get folks hyped about the upcoming release, she'll be sharing a series of performance videos that will take place throughout Philly. Below is the first where we find Moser serenading cars with a vunerable, stripped-down version of "Yr Undertaker" as they whiz by on Columbus Ave. You can also catch her live (minus the passing traffic) at Union Transfer on Wednesday, June 14 with Sorority Noise, Fort Wanderers, and The Obsessives

Mare Island Releases New Single - Unawake

The San Francisco based band, Mare Island has released a new single, Unawake:

While the various members of Mare Island have known each other and toured together for years, Mare Island is a band over a decade in the making. Vocalist Josh Staples and bassist Sean Leary grew up childhood friends in Sonoma County. Staples first provided guest vocals on Loma Preita’s 2007 album Last City, which started regular contributions. Having left Loma Prieta at the start of this decade, guitarist Sean Chao had a happenstance run-in with Leary in 2015. The duo began writing and demoing songs, bringing Staples in to provide lyrics and vocals, with Chao’s roommate Evan Sarna joining on drums. Mare Island’s music makes clear nods toward the members’ other projects, but with outward experimental pushes through the use of pitch-shifted loops and samples. Working with producer/engineer Ian Pellicci (Deerhoof/The Dodos/Thao and the Get Down Stay Down), the group brought in San Francisco's Magik*Magik Orchestra, imbuing the songs with a rich, ethereal quality.

Mare Island will release their debut, Eponymous EP on June 23rd.

Dolly Spartans get covered by The Wild Honey Pie, play Shea on 06.01

We heard talent when we heard Dolly Spartans' debut EP by Dolly Spartans in the spring of 2015 - and that's why we named it our record of the month. We are glad to see other local blogs covering the young NYC quartet: The Wild Honey Pie just posted a very flattering review of their latest single "It's not Easy" (streaming below). The group just released sophomore EP 'Time Sides With No One' and it's scheduled to perform at the new Shea Stadium location on June 1st, which we are not entirely sure is defined yet, although the venue recently more than succeeded in funding a Kickstarter campaign for its new spot.
