The 5th Annual Freakout! Fest comes back tonight

Triple city-based indie label Freakout Records has been churning out some pretty fine electronic, psych and lively rock from three out of the four corners of the states. Operating out of Seattle, Los Angeles and New York, Freakout has taken to occupying various venues in Ballard for its festival since 2012, with artists of their own catalog, as well as other artists scattered around the Northwest and the country. Freakout! Festival returns again tonight, and its bill is as stacked as ever.

Co-presented by The Stranger, Audioasis on KEXP and supported by Killroom Records, Treefort Music Fest and Artist Home Record Club, Freakout! Fest will be hitting up its usual Ballard staples like Conor Byrne and Tractor Tavern, with Sarah Gerritsen and Roadkill Ghost Choir kicking things off with some early sets. Tonight's hip hop will be fulfilled by up and coming lyricist Taylar Elizza Beth, with some dark stoner psych coming from Blackwater Holy Light. Energetically folky blues comes from Battleme, who are out on tour supporting their new Cult Psychotica release, while Charms and FKL bring more of a dancey feel to a couple of the headlining spots.

Much of Saturday's bill recalls a warmer, more carefree season thanks to some surf-drenched sets from Baywitch, The Shivas and Guantanamo Baywatch, The White Tears and Pearl Dragon is Dead are collaborating on their performance at the Conor Byrne, Porter Ray and Jus Moni killing it in the rhythm and rhymes department, and Kelli Schaefer and Maiah Manser representing for solo noir pop.

There's so many more acts to see, thank goodness they're all playing on the same street. You can find more information about the artists, venues and tickets over at the Freakout Records site.

Bong Kitty wows with clean, complex surfy garage rock in 'Worst Party Ever EP'

When it comes to the San Francisco-based garage band Bong Kitty, surf and slacker influences come together to form timely, tight rock. Listening to the Worst Party Ever EP feels like sitting on the beach with all your friends—if your friend group consisted mostly of the cast of Dazed and Confused, that is. It’s surf rock, but with an edge; the guitar parts are dynamic and reverb soaked displays of good, clean, Dick Dale-influenced fun while the vocals are hazy with some clear slacker influences. Stream the EP below and keep an eye out for Bong Kitty’s next live show because they are not ones to miss. - Lilly Milman

Debut RunHideFight Demo EP Available for Streaming

Geeta Simons (Rockula, Swisher) packed away the guitar and amp to finish up her education, get married, and eventually raise two girls. However, she began to get what Jo Anne from Thorazine described as "The 7 Year Itch": "That hunger that hits when our children are old enough (7 years old) that they don’t mind if Mom stays out late to turn up to 11." Simons decided to take over the kids' playroom for a little me time and record an EP of blistering garage-rock demos under the moniker of RunHideFight, with help from Hot Snakes' Jason Kourkounis on drums and Otherworld Traditions' Jay Demko on bass, as well production duties. You can stream it below, and catch Simons scratching that itch tonight at Johnny Brenda's, where she'll be backed by Deli fave Brother JT, Stinking Lizaveta's Cheshire Agusta, and Christine Weiser (of Mae Pang and Suffacox). They'll be opening for legendary Cleveland rock outfit Pere Ube and Minibeast, which features Peter Prescott (Mission Of Burma, Volcano Suns).

YAASSS bring Psychedelic "Falafel" Rock to Baby's All Right, 11.21

YAASSS is a musical affirmation of one’s kinkier side, of unapologetic gratification through sex, drugs, and shisha-tinged psych rock. However, beyond neon pink fishnets and moshing through a sea of cigarettes, you'll find a unique blend of hallucinogenic glam pop and Middle-Eastern guitar riffs (a glorious side-effect of their self-proclaimed “falafel rock” aesthetic). YAASSS is the queer carnivalesque personified: humor, chaos, and a subversively good time. Get down and get dirty with YAASSS at a free show at Baby’s All Right on 11.21. - Amanda Ogea
