The Writhing Squares

New Writhing Squares EP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Out of the Ether, the new album from Philly garage-psych duo Writhing Squares, is out today via Trouble In Mind Records. Brimming with pulsating, rhythmic grooves, Kevin Nickles (Ecstatic Vision, Taiwan Housing Project) and Daniel Provenzano (Purling Hiss, Spacin') launch into space, riding a noise-infused, free-jazz rocket. Step into the future, and have your mind altered. You can catch their record release show at Kung Fu Necktie on Thursday, February 7, where they'll be supported by Sparrow Steeple and labelmates Headroom.

Weekend Warrior, January 12 - 14

Blast off into the weekend, as the tandem of Kevin Nickles (Ecstatic Vision, Taiwan Housing Project) and Daniel Provenzano (Purling Hiss, Spacin') continuously pushes the boundaries, fusing hard-driving, raw rhythms, space-transmitted vocals and blasts of tangential-tracing free jazz into a Krautrock-melting pot of sound. Developing layers of flavor through inventive instrumental combinations, The Writhing Squares cultivates an air of surprise and intrigue as one straps into the sonic shuttle uncertain of what discoveries lie in the future. This Saturday, at PhilaMOCA, the Philly outfit will be opening the proceedings, followed by local punk/reggae-groovin' legends, Scram. This leads the way to the DC instrumental trio of The Messthetics, which includes former Fugazi members Brendan Canty and Joe Lally, whose debut album is due out later this year via Dischord Records. The Writhing Squares Record Release Show at KFN Aug. 11

Kevin Nickles (Ecstatic Vision, Taiwan Housing Project) and Daniel Provenzano (Purling Hiss, Spacin') rocket through space as The Writhing Squares. Tonight, the duo celebrates their latest album In The Void Above (Siltbreeze) with a performance at Kung Fu Necktie. The hard-driving record circles as components of chaotic noise emanate amid the locked-down bass and percussion, while the vocal interjections serve as captain-esque reference points. Splashed with the additional sonic colors of flute and saxophone, this noise-rock meets jazz ambiance steers toward the unexplored in a twisted futuristic groove. This evening’s festivities will also feature the local psych-punk of Igneous Eyes and the commanding psych-rock power of Birds of Maya. The genre-elusive, jazz-rock freak-out that is Massachusetts’s The Blues Dream Box completes this adventurous night of music. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. New Track: "Balloon To The Moon" - The Writhing Squares

Launch into the stratosphere while you listen to “Balloon To The Moon,” off The Writhing Squares forthcoming LP In The Void Above, which will be released on July 29 via Siltbreeze Records. The bass-anchored propulsion swims in a funky, jazz-accented vessel, providing intriguing twists. The saxophone jumps off that backend drive and psych-oriented vocals, emerging through the clouds. Catch the duo with Alto! and Valley Exit next Tuesday, July 5 at Kung Fu Necktie! (Photo by Ben Leaphart)
