Jennifer Pague has found a cozy home in L.A. for her synth-pop project Vita and the Woolf, her new album Anna Ohio chronicling just that mixture of emotions seemingly arising and consuming the city like pastel blue smog. Each track in the new record has a distinct character to it: where a song like “Paris” uses swelling synths and string instruments to dream up fantastic voyages, “Confetti” lets crisp-clean electric guitar leads accompany Pague’s on-target vocals for a song with hints of nostalgia and acceptance. Such emotions are followed up and further explored in  fierce songs like “Home.” Strong beat-driven songs like “Feet” ooze Pague’s confidence as synth flourishes gush flowing colors from the track. You also get songs like “Auntie Anne’s Waitress,” which are light in theme but full and exquisite in composition. What began yesterday at Johnny Brenda’s with Pissed Jeans and Soul Glo continues for the next two days at World Cafe Live. Tonight, the elegant hypnotically galvanizing pop of Vita and the Woolf, the endless boogie of Low Cut Connie, the raw and ragged, sweat-saturated, surf-infused, garage rock of The Whips, and the earnest, scene-transporting, songwriting force of Waxahatchee are among those that shape its sonic surroundings. And tomorrow, Palm cultivates an experimental push-pull, hovering between tranquil waves and frenetic, unconventional changes in direction. The melodic, eruptive, dynamic swings of The Districts, the tenacious, cosmic-rocking, riff-combusting charge of Ruby the Hatchet, and the soothing, introspective vulnerability of powerpop trio Hurry are also slated for Saturday. Via Out Of Town Films, Vita and the Woolf released a new video for “Sun Drop”. Filmed at South Philly’s Bok building, the footage jumps between the hauntingly elegant dance of Lauren Williams and Hillary Pearson (choreographed by Antonia Z Brown) and Jennifer Pague’s rooftop contemplations. Vita and the Woolf recently dropped their much-anticipated album, Tunnels, via Believe Digital. Draped in dramatic synths and pulse-elevating percussion, Jennifer Pague’s elegant, soulfully powerful voice continuously reaches new heights. While all those components further entrench themselves, an underlying danceability emerges through the shadowy soundscapes. You can find Vita and the Woolf showing off their versatility on Saturday, August 19 at the 56th annual Philadelphia Folk Festival.

Deep, ominous tones permeate in “Sun Drop,” the latest single from Vita and the Woolf. Featured on their forthcoming album Tunnels, which is set for release on June 16, the song lurks in the futuristic shadows as a percussive/bass/synth-harnessing sonic setting stirs up the pot, lighting the fuse for Jennifer Pague’s powerful, authoritative vocal display. Vita and the Woolf will be performing at Firefly next month.
