The Tough Shits

New The Tough Shits LP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Warmer weather is on the horizon, and not so coincidentally, The Tough Shits have come out of recording hibernation with a new record, Burning In Paradise, out via Burger Records. The album captures a joyful, slow-burning, late-night, spring/summer aesthetic. They are melodic, sweaty, nostalgic songs that demand one to sing along with a sense of community; however, the tracks also fire on all cylinders with the undeniable ability to stomp and shred. You now have time to learn some lyrics for the band's upcoming performance at Johnny Brenda's on Monday, June 24 with Daddy Long Legs.

Weekend Warrior, September 8 - 10

Toward the tail end of last month, Oh Sees released their new album Orc (Castle Face Records). Stretching into a spacey psych-garage paradigm, the band shreds through the ether, while casting strange scenarios of odd artistic visions, projecting an idiosyncratic ideal. Tonight, they’ll be supported at The Troc by the down and dirty pairing of garage-rock locals The Whips and The Tough Shits. The Whips’ slithering, slack/surf-inflected songs instantly catch one on an enthusiastic hook-driven, groove-shaking journey. Add the instantly enthusiastic, get-down energy of The Whips, and let the weekend wind down commence. – Michael Colavita

On the Go w/The Tough Shits at Boot & Saddle Aug. 8

A three-pronged, locally-flavored punk billing hits Boot & Saddle tonight. Retro-fitted for that classic, catchy, brimming-with-energy vibe that spills over into the audience, The Tough Shits capture a chilled-out yet constantly-on-the-go garage sound. Their playful partying injects enough unfiltered attitude to create a raw edge, balancing things out with that bubbly surfing backdrop - crisp and yet still loose in a way that fits one’s weekend needs. Upon rolling up to Boot & Saddle this evening, they’ll be joined by the fuzzed-out, sprinting-out-of-the-blocks punk of Cheerbleeders, while the snarling, full-steam-ahead, melodically balanced tunes of The Prisoners get things started. Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 8pm, $10, 21+ - Michael Colavita

Weekend Warrior, July 10 - 12

Tonight, Underground Arts (specifically the cozy confines of the Black Box) will be abuzz as a trio of local acts revs up the audience for tonight’s headliner. That initial sky-rocketing blast will be detonated by Harsh Vibes, whose cosmic journey plays in fuzzed-out long form. They stretch sonic waves to allow those noisy particles to methodically gather momentum and fortitude, while maintaining a steady course and exploring unknown regions, only to seamlessly transition into a higher gear in the optimal setting. It’s a powerful-meets-purposeful head-trip. After just sharing a few new demos, the propulsive synth- driven, creeping wave of The Bad Doctors will rouse you to your feet, although you may want to occasionally peer over your shoulder. Meanwhile, the get-loose, surf-garage rock of The Tough Shits retain a gritty spirit, producing the type of songs that you’ll replay in your head throughout the weekend. They’ll be bridging the divide to the heavy plunge of California psych-garage outfit Meatbodies. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 8pm, $12, 21+ - Michael Colavita

Weekend Warrior, May 1 - 3

Reinvigorated, The Tough Shits setup shop this evening at Kung Fu Necktie. The band doesn’t follow a tight to the vest script. Rather, they play a loose easily embraceable brand of garage-punk - the kind that rolls out like a wave and draws you in with its party atmosphere, while combining steady, slapping percussion and those bass-backed jangly guitar riffs that spiral out and run free at just the right moment. Throw in lyrics that resonate in a youthfully immediate manner, and you have a recipe for an energizing yet chilled-out show - the type that draws sweat, incites crowd participation without having to ask for it - a perfectly imperfect rousing scenario.  Slated to join them on the bill are DC garage surf-pop four-piece Shark Week, whose full-length debut Beach Fuzz, will available May 19 via PaperCup Music. San Diego’s Crocodiles, whose latest record Boys is due out May 12, headline cutting through polished, melodic rock with a garage core. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $10, 21+ - Michael Colavita
