Summer Moon

Summer Moon bring their own brand of New Wave to Rough Trade on 04.19

Summer Moon, the work of Nikolai Fraiture, is an indie rock/new wave outfit steeped in pop experimentation. The New York based musician explores guitar and percussion layering in ways that bring '80s pioneers like The Talking Heads to mind (in fact, single “With You Tonight” almost sounds like it has a guitar sample from “This Must Be The Place”). With subdued, reverb-soaked vocals, Fraiture lets the subtle production techniques speak for themselves. This project offers the energy and vitality of electronic dance music while satisfying those who crave analogue instrumentation in a musical climate increasingly devoid of it. Give their debut album, 'With You Tonight,' a listen now, go see them at Rough Trade on April 19 and check out this 360 interactive video of the single, below. - Andrew Strader

Buzz Alert: Summer Moon plays Summer Stage on 08.05 + Baby's All Right on 08.11 (rescheduled from 07.28)

NYC based quartet Summer Moon might feature elements of The Strokes (Nikolai Fraiture) and Au Revoire Simone (Erika Spring) but still perfectly fits the profile of "emerging band" - hence our coverage. The band only released two singles this far ('With You Tonight' - streaming, and 'Happenin''), but seems to have what it takes to take off internationally in the next few months, including a booking agent as influential as Marsha Vlasic. The band had to reschedule their July 28th Baby's All Right show because of an ankle injury occurred to drummer Tennessee Thomas (formerly of The Like). The show is now scheduled for August 11th, and it could be one of the last opportunities to see these guys in an intimate medium size venue. Summer Moon will also perform at Central Park's Summer Stage on 08.05 with Father John Misty. Yep, that's the kind of gig influential booking agents get you...

An off-kilter NYC supergroup is born: Summer Moon - live at Baby's All Right on 07.28

Featuring Nikolai Fraiture (bassist of The Strokes), Erika Spring (of Au Revoire Simone's fame), The Like's former drummer Tennessee Thomas, and NYC songwriter and guitarist Lewis Lazar, the new band Summer Moon certainly doesn't sound like what it is (a "supergroup"), which, considering the talent at work, makes things rather exciting. The quartet played a show at SXSW in March before releasing any material, and finally unveiled first single "Happenin'" (streaming) in late May. The track is an upbeat number propelled by martial, Joy Division-esque drums and semi-atonal percussive electronic sounds. The simple, clean rhythm guitar and bass lines point back again to the darker sounds of the '80s (think The Cure's 'Seventeen Seconds') but somehow the tune doesn't come across like post punk revival, thanks to vocals that adopt a more modern approach to melody and rhythm. Those interested in hearing more should hurry to buy tickets for Summer Moon's upcoming show at Baby's All Right on 07.28.
