The Spirit of the Beehive

New Music Video: "Ricky (Caught Me Tryin')" - The Spirit of the Beehive

We are happy to hear that The Spirit and the Beehive's highly anticipated forthcoming album, Pleasure Suck, now has an official release date. Due out March 24 via Tiny Engines, the band just shared the LP's lead single, "Ricky (Caught Me Tryin')". The track is also accompanied by a seriously tripped-out video, which came from the mind of Nnamdi Ogbonnaya. The Spirit and the Beehive will be performing next in Philly on February 20 at Baird Mansion Atrium as part of a rad lineup that also includes Naomi Punk, PC Worship, and Dark Mtns

Misfits Under Mistletoe - The Guild’s 2016 Holiday Jawn at KFN Dec. 22

DIY promoter collective The Guild will be holding its annual holiday covers concert tonight at Kung Fu Necktie. What’s in store at Misfits Under Mistletoe - The Guild’s 2016 Holiday Jawn? Joining forces will be members of Cayetana and Timeshare to kick out your favorite Replacements’ jams as Playing Makeup, Wearing Guitar, while members of The Spirit of the Beehive and Loose Tooth will be on hand to explore the catalogue of The Nerves. Shannen Moser and company, who will be known this evening as Shan and These Charming Men, are sure to play plenty of beloved songs from The Smiths, with Curtis Cooper and friends taking on System of a Down. Gamers will also be treated to music from Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2 soundtracks, which will be performed by members of Jet Set Sail and PEARS – the band. And as if this wasn’t already enough, The Guild Family Goddamn Cover Band will be closing things out with “the greatest hits of ALL TIME!” It will be a wonderful night to spend with your chosen family, before you find yourself sitting around the boob tube with those other folks this Xmas weekend. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 Front St., 8pm, $5, 21+ - Alexis V.

The Spirit of the Beehive Sign to Tiny Engines & Announce Release of New LP in March

After announcing last year that they would be releasing their next album via Jade Tree, we have just learned that The Spirit of the Beehive have just signed to the family of Tiny Engines. Although the band does not want to elaborate on the "mess" and "hurdles" faced to get the highly-anticipated LP out, we are very excited to hear that it is scheduled to see the light of day in March 2017. Congrats to the guys and gal of The Spirit of the B and Tiny Engines for snatching up another great Philly act! (Photo by Emily Burtner)

Weekend Warrior, June 24 - 26

Though The Spirit of the Beehive had some van trouble on their current tour, they’ll still be rolling into town this evening at The Foundry. The shoegaze-y grunge crew has been on the road in support of Superheaven’s final tour. (I’m really looking forward to their upcoming release via Jade Tree.) And they have been joined by fellow Philly grunge-psych rockers Creepoid, who have been taking this opportunity to get more comfortable with their new guitarist Bill Fries (of Drone Ranger). It’s going to get heavy upstairs in the Fillmore tonight - #bringweed! The Foundry, 1000 Frankford Ave., 8pm, $15, 21+ - Alexis V.

Weekend Warrior, April 22 - 24

Philly's own Ranch Records is hosting a Ram 1500-sized event at First Unitarian this Saturday, and I can guarantee there will be a hemi under that hood, a.k.a. top tier performances by your favorite Ranch Jams bands. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Ranch’s output, they’re the ones behind Philadelphia’s finest gloom-punk and junk-rock bands like The Spirit of The Beehive, whose grunge re-meets shoegaze sound ranges from mudflap grit to pure, synthetic motor oil, open road ramblers Dogs on Acid with their whimsical and unfurling power pop, GUNK, whose smudgy slacker-pop songs drawl and tweak like truck-stop thugs, NAH, whose noisy, heavily percussive, electronic glitch music is the sonic equivalent of that rusty, rattling but reliable hemi engine passing the 200,000 mark, and Congenital Death, the reckless, passing-on-the-right power drivers, whose sheer velocity and bellicosity will make you scared for your life. All of the bands mentioned above and more will be playing the Big Gig Truck festival so truck it on over to First Unitarian for a piece of the action. First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., 6pm, $12, All Ages - Bryce Woodcock
