Small Black

Small Black on Fall US tour supporting 'Best Blues,' plays Warsaw on 11.14

Brooklyn’s Small Black is on their Fall US tour promoting their third full-length release, Best Blues, an album whose... blue aura is likely to resonate with us in our toughest days in the city. The lyrics “loss of wonder,” “A sea of pasts,” and “pictures of youth / picturing you” from the track “Boy’s Life” express these feelings linguistically, while the tight-knit electronic soundscape recreate them musically, supported by a rhythm section that doesn't renounce a dancy, upbeat tempo. The lyrics are embedded within layers of spacious synths, warm piano embellishments, guitars lingering behind, and the graceful ambience of Kolenik’s vocals. Small Black will be back in New York on November 14 for their performance at Warsaw Concert. In the meantime, listen to “Boy’s Life” down below. - Ashley Muniz

Small Black releases video for "No Stranger" + plays Music Hall on 06.30

Here's Small Black's new video for single "No Stranger" - is this nu new romanticism? The band will be hitting Music Hall of Williamsburg on June 30, at the end of a US tour that started a few days ago..

Small Black releases "Limits of Desire" in May

Small Black are something of the Daft Punk of Williamsburg, an act whose every gesture seems to convey neon’s crushingly unstoppable ascension. The band’s new album, "Limits of Desire," continues to adapt first-wave synthpop to their younger roots in shoegaze and indie-rock, a sound that is now synonymous with Aughts Brooklyn. What’s left to prove? A song like “No Stranger” (which we had the opportunity to hear in advance the album press copy) seems to offer some answers with its maze of drunken synths gliding effortlessly underneath the sweet refrain of “You’re no stranger to me,” a sentiment that could easily unite a room full of lost souls who found themselves suddenly holding hands and dancing like this was their last night on earth. For a generation who is open to (and has access to) everything, maybe that kind of secular unity is all they really want. Check out the trailer for the upcoming album here, listen to the first single "Free at Dawn" below. - Brian Chidester
