The Rare Occasions

The Rare Occasions release new single "Set It Right"

In these times of limited movement, nothing says that you can't get the blood pumping inside your own home. If you need a track to help you get your body moving, consider The Rare Occasions' "Set It Right", a track pleading for kindness in the form of blistering indie rock. During these next few weeks, kindness will be necessary, as well as the need to dance. "Set It Right" is the perfect anthem in those cases; adding it to your end-of-the-world playlists would be wise. The Rare Occasions just appeared on the recent compilation cover album honoring Green Day's Insomniac, featuring many of LA's best up-and-coming indie bands. They'll also release an EP in two parts over the course of the year. Take a listen to "Set It Right" below. - Will Sisskind

The Rare Occasions to release new EP 8/13, go on east coast tour

As it's developed over the years, the garage-rock genre, and it's variations, has grown to include many types of music, and none know this better than Boston by-way-of Providence group The Rare Occasions. Instead of opting to section themselves off into one of the genre's many corners, the band instead embraces its multi-faceted nature wholeheartedly, and play tunes that fall anywhere on the spectrum between swampy pop all the way to harder, dischordant punk. Because of this it's hard to know what to expect off of their forth-coming EP Futureproof, due out August 13th, aside from it should be eclectically electric.  The Rare Occasions are going on an east coast tour in support of their new EP available on 8/5, indluding a release show at The Middle East on 8/13. —Henry Solotaroff-Webber

The Rare Occasions bring down the mood in "Dysphoric" video

If you liked our recently featured artist The Rare Occasions, check out their newly released video for “Dysphoric,” the urgent opening track from May’s Feelers EP. The video is an update on the classic performance clip, with a straightjacket, claustrophobic close-up shots and the world’s most melancholy birthday celebration capturing the song’s titular mood. You can watch “Dysphoric” below. – Jake Reed (@jakejreed)

The Rare Occasions bring the feels on "Feelers"

Released in May, The Rare Occasions’ Feelers EP kicks off with “Dysphoric,” which is equal parts psychedelic and dark-tinted surf rock, its bridge erupting from a single repeated note into a well-calculated guitar solo. Next, “Fell Through” shows off the band’s knack for odd time signatures and sets the more cheerful tone that the band maintains throughout the rest of the five-song set. The glockenspiel-aided “La Mort” bridges the band’s softer and harder sides, starting off as a soft ballad but rounding out the EP’s final minute with sweeping guitars and pained vocals. Take a listen to “La Mort” below and download Feelers for $5 at the guys’ Bandcamp page. – Jake Reed (@jakejreed)

Come to a Deli sponsored show and Boston Marathon fundraiser next Wednesday

Next Wednesday, May 22, Radio (381 Somerville Ave.) in Somerville will be playing host to a benefit show for the Boston Marathon victims. The event, titled "Concert for Boston: An Evening to Benefit Victims of the Marathon" has a line-up full of local favorites and newcomers alike.

The opening act, Greater Fools, is a new side-project from Troy Ramey, previous front-man for the now-defunct In Like Lions. If his previous band was any indication, Greater Fools will be sure to start the night off with great energy and catchy hooks.

Amory Sivertson is a Boston-area favorite, with her well-written piano songs and beautifully-crafted melodies.

The Rare Occasions are a great fit within this lineup--adding their unique blend of pop/rock n' roll to an already impeccable list of performers.

Closing out the night will be The Bridgebuilders, whose soulful vocals and music rooted in folk and dripping with bluesy emotion are an act you can't afford to miss.

Cover charge will be $10, with 100% of the cover being donated to The One Fund. Doors are at 7PM, with Greater Fools starting at 8PM. 21+ to enter, proper ID required.

Come show your support for Boston, have a few drinks and listen to some great live music!
