Weekend Warrior - August 30 - September 1

Hopefully you have Monday off to recover from this week’s Weekend Warrior pick. SRA Records will be hosting its 10th Anniversary Bash this Sunday at PhilaMOCA. The local indie label is never shy about bringing us some of the heaviest, hardest-hitting acts to come out of Philly. The celebration’s stacked lineup will consist of SRA family & friends – Chronic Anxiety, Psychic Teens, The HIRS Collective, Soul Glo, Solarized, Exmaid, FOD, and Gene London Calling. Get there early for the matinee hours and beyond! And if you happen to be one of the unfortunate ones who don’t have Labor Day off, then just quit already because they obviously don’t appreciate you. – Alexis V.

Weekend Warrior, May 5 - 7

Psychic Teens orchestrate gloomy, ruminating, melodic post-punk with volatile noisy tendencies, magnifying the murky slow burn into a full-on, shoegazing spectacle. Tonight, the trio celebrates their latest album HEX (available via Hex Records) with a release show at Boot & Saddle, where they’ll explore the darkness via steel-cold, slicing guitars and booming, brooding, baritone vocals. They’ll be joined by the combative, grunge-punk quartet of Tiny Vices and the ferocious, fuzzed-out, psych instrumentations meets clairvoyant, catchy vocals of Dulls. And after releasing their sophomore album New Kind of Normal via their own label Plum Records earlier today, Augusta Koch, Allegra Anka and Kelly Olsen, a.k.a. Cayetana, welcome their introspective, honest, emotive rock release this evening with a show at First Unitarian Church, where they’ll be supported by Shannen Moser, Katie Ellen, and Aster More.

A day after releasing their new LP Veblen Death Mask via Kill Rock Stars, the enchanting, eclectic experimentation of Taiwan Housing Project steps into Johnny Brenda’s, wielding their off-kilter, jigsaw-puzzle sound, meshing the hauntingly unexpected with the inherently gripping. They’ll be sharing the stage with the mind-warping psych-punk of Igneous Eyes and ESCAPE-Ism, the latest project from D.C. stalwart Ian Svenonius.

The crowds head back to Boot & Saddle this Sunday for a March On Harrisburg Benefit, featuring the exuberant, melodic, psych-folk stretches of Pine Barons. They’ll be donating their time along with the get-loose, retro-fitted psych-pop of Ceramic Animal and harmony-harnessing trio of TIOGA. - Michael Colavita

New Psychic Teens EP Available for Streaming

Gloomy melodies thrust forward with steel-cutting guitar and deep-tunneling backend, HEX, the new EP from Psychic Teens, immediately perks one's ears. Officially due out this Friday, April 21 via Hex Records, you can now stream the record in its entirety at CLRVYNT. The five-song EP is electrified in a moody, noisy clash between bleak resignation and resilience. Hovering that threshold between despair and aggression, the band keeps moving. They'll be celebrating its arrival at Boot & Saddle on Friday, May 5, with Tiny Vices and Dulls.

New Track: "SICKO" - Psychic Teens

It feels like it's been a minute since we've heard new material from Philly gothic post-punk power trio Psychic Teens. And the wait was well worth it! "SICKO," the band's latest incendiary single, sets ablaze all in its path with bloodcurdling guitar slashes and unrelenting percussive bombardments. No one will be spared. It's an unfiltered, revealing, dystopian depiction of our modern day society. "SICKO" can be found on the group's forthcoming EP HEX, due out April 21 via Hex Records.

Weekend Warrior, November 4 - 6

Ominous ruminations churn in the post-punk trio of Psychic Teens. Larry Ragone’s bellowing baritone commands one’s attention, circling the gloomy pensions that bounce in the mind during periods of isolation. That unnerving spiral rushes ahead, as a hanging electric charge of guitar sparks and a smattering of shadowy backend accelerates, completing the heavy melodic circuit. This Sunday night, the power trio will be rustling the crowd at the First Unitarian Church. Ronnie Vega ushers in the evening, delivering a grimy, grungy brand of hip-hop and a pair of Don Giovanni artists in the socially conscious, status-quo-shaking, noise-sample-smashing force of Camae Ayewa, a.k.a. Moor Mother, and the locked-in, adrenalin-pumping sound of Screaming Females completes this stacked billing. First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., 7:30pm, $15, All Ages - Michael Colavita
