Weekend Warrior, September 23 - 25

There’s no room for you to hide from conflict in the songcraft of Camae Ayewa, a.k.a. Moor Mother. Erring toward a jarring fantasticism that is well-grounded in reality, Moor Mother makes use of analog equipment, sampling and field recordings to churn out hauntingly oblique production, uniting voices throughout time into a common narrative of resistance. Beyond the grinding synths is a prolific artist, thinker and organizer. Ayewa’s Community Futures Lab - an initiative aimed at providing a gallery, workshop and collective memory project to marginalized communities - has been nominated by the Philly Geek Awards for Impact Organization of the Year. Local DIY art gallery Vox Populi is currently featuring some of her sound design work through the end of October, and her literature is available online in the form of zines and hardbound books.  Through various modes of production Ayewa’s projects explore identity politics, time and memory with a striking clarity, bringing to the forefront the anxieties of our historical present. Fetish Bones, Moor Mother’s debut LP on Don Giovanni Records, places her work in the company of other significant artists such as Downtown Boys and Screaming Females. Her record release party is this Saturday night in Brewerytown at the Yung Kandy Collective, and she’ll be joined on stage by fellow Philly experimental artist NAH. Yung Kandy Collective, 2809 W. Girard Ave., 7pm, $12, All Ages - Josh Kelly

NAH Opening for Mykki Blanco at PhilaMOCA Sept. 15

Menacing, bombastic beats that authoritatively engulf their surroundings, shifting the dial in a raw-real street style that hits now while pointing toward the future, NAH smacks with sonics. While percussion consistently asserts its presence, atmosphere-altering, electronic sequences illustrate the morphing, combative setting in which this music resides. Simultaneously meshing dark, dramatic structures with dance grooves tying in a sense of torment with vocal aggression, the results are an ear-popping, edgy, experimental brand of hip-hop. Tonight at PhilaMOCA, he lays the groundwork, at this R5-presented show, for Mykki Blanco, whose debut solo album Mykki will be released tomorrow. New Track: "same fucking line" - NAH

NAH, a.k.a. Michael Kuhn, has been working on a full-length album, Michael, for the past year. As he gets closer to the finish line, we are treated to a dope-ass new track in "same fucking line". His rhythmic diction gets your blood racing before slyly laying down a hot groove and sucking you into his vortex of sound. Come be invigorated by the one-man band when NAH opens for Mykki Blanco on Thursday, Sept. 15 at PhilaMOCA! (Photo by Emily Burtner)

Weekend Warrior, April 22 - 24

Philly's own Ranch Records is hosting a Ram 1500-sized event at First Unitarian this Saturday, and I can guarantee there will be a hemi under that hood, a.k.a. top tier performances by your favorite Ranch Jams bands. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Ranch’s output, they’re the ones behind Philadelphia’s finest gloom-punk and junk-rock bands like The Spirit of The Beehive, whose grunge re-meets shoegaze sound ranges from mudflap grit to pure, synthetic motor oil, open road ramblers Dogs on Acid with their whimsical and unfurling power pop, GUNK, whose smudgy slacker-pop songs drawl and tweak like truck-stop thugs, NAH, whose noisy, heavily percussive, electronic glitch music is the sonic equivalent of that rusty, rattling but reliable hemi engine passing the 200,000 mark, and Congenital Death, the reckless, passing-on-the-right power drivers, whose sheer velocity and bellicosity will make you scared for your life. All of the bands mentioned above and more will be playing the Big Gig Truck festival so truck it on over to First Unitarian for a piece of the action. First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., 6pm, $12, All Ages - Bryce Woodcock
