She Shreds Magazine Philly Showcase w/Swearin', Amanda X, Mannequin Pussy, Anomie & More at PhilaMOCA April 4

In honor of its seventh issue, the only magazine that's dedicated to women guitarists and bassists, She Shreds Magazine, has put together an East Coast tour showcase of female shredders. And their stop at PhilaMOCA tonight will be headlined by Allison Crutchfield and the rest of Swearin', whom have been recording new material. So expect the rock ‘n’ roll tour de force to give a suitable preview. Amanda X will thunder in with their infectious lyrics and fast-paced garage-rock sound that has helped them blow up since the release of Amnesia over the summer. Since arriving on the scene, New York transplants Mannequin Pussy have been obliterating DIY shows with hard-hitting drums, quickened gang vocals, and sick guitar shreds. So they’ll definitely be in their element for this one! The show will also feature the promising new solo side project of Field Mouse’s Rachel Browne, Anomie, Girls Rock Philly incarnation, Jane Doe, and DJ Sad 13 (a.k.a. Sadie Dupuis from Speedy Ortiz). PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 7pm, $10, All Ages - Bill McThrill

Mumblr Staying Active at Everybody Hits April 1

Alt rockers Mumblr were one of the most active local acts last year, willing to perform anywhere and everywhere around Philly. That spirit has continued into 2015 with the band gearing up to hit the road next week for an East Coast tour with Soda Bomb. However, they do have a rad show this evening at Everybody Hits where you'll find the group hosting The Deli NYC's 2013 Artist of the Year, Big Ups. They'll also be joined by fiery NYC transplants Mannequin Pussy and all-female punk-pop trio Blowdryer. No, this is not an April Fool's prank, and hump day just got a whole lot better! (BTW: Check out Mumblr's recent visit to Sleepless Sound Studio for their Red Room Series HERE.) Everybody Hits, 529 W. Girard Ave., 8pm, $7 Donation, All Ages - Alexis V.

Weekend Warrior, March 13 - 15

There are few (if any) shows in town that are going to be better this weekend than this Sunday’s bill at South Philly’s A House Named Virtue. Headlined by NYC transplants via Connecticut and New Jersey, Mannequin Pussy, the trio of Marissa Dabice (guitar/vocals), Thanasi Paul (guitar), and Kaleen Reading (drums), perform with such ferocity that you just can’t help but instantly become a fan. Well, that’s if you enjoy being obliterated by loud, aggressive punk; however, they also have the ability to create haunting, anthemic melodies that lie under their thick wall of noise. Ex-Dangerous Ponies’ Chrissy Tashjian, Kyle Pulley, and Mike Tashjian are back together again with Thin Lips, a project that holds on to the combination’s ability to write infectious pop hooks, while giving Pulley room to unleash his inner hardcore kid. Cousin Brian, with their new lineup, will be performing their first show since Halloween. Also joining the house party are Boston’s Ben Katzman’s Degreaser and Miami’s The Jellyfish Brothers. A House Named Virtue (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info.), 8pm, $5, All Ages - Alexis V.

The Deli Philly’s New Year’s Eve Show Roundup

There is too much great local music happening tonight that you can’t possibly cover and see it all. Here’s a roundup of some shows that you should be at to ring in the New Year this evening. A hot one will be newly signed to Saddle Creek, Hop Along, at Johnny Brenda’s for a sold-out show with Thin Lips and roses. The group recently wrapped up its stint in the studio where they’ve been working on their next label album with producer John Agnello (Kurt Vile, Dinosaur Jr., etc.) so there should be plenty of new material. Philly indie-rock mainstays Man Man, opening for Gogol Bordello at the E Factory, should be a fantastic show. Our friends at PhilaMOCA will be hosting Mannequin Pussy and the Jawbreaker reunion. A Sunny Day in Glasgow are capping off their holiday run at Boot & Saddle. Shaky Jake and his Killer Bangs crew are taking over Kung Fu Necktie with psych outfit Drone Ranger and stoner metalheads Ruby the Hatchet. And take some swings at batting cages/DIY music space Everybody Hits with The Spirit of the Beehive and Mike Bell & The Movies. And the list goes on and on… Share how you’re spending your NYE?
