A fragile, on-the-edge, emotive exposure develops as the easily combustible, inwardly-isolated yet outwardly-rushing sound is created by Mumblr on their new record The Never Ending Get Down. While it won’t officially be released via Fleeting Youth Records until June 10, the quartet has revealed it over at Stereogum. Catch their record release show this Saturday, June 11 at PhilaMOCA with Amanda X and Mannequin Pussy! 

Upon first listening to Philly’s self-described punk rock band Cayetana, it may be difficult to isolate a traditionally punk influence beneath the layers of pop mindfulness, stirring melodies, and undisguised, often poignant sincerity. The songs have a driving pace that is somehow unhurried and tunes that are downright whistle-able, accompanied by lead singer Augusta Koch’s Emily Haines-esque voice that never quite breaches the boundaries of “inside voice.” The minimalist guitar progressions and dynamic energy of the songs are unmistakably traceable to punk rock, but the connection becomes clearer when you examine the ethos behind the music. Lyrics from different songs seem to unite around the concept of carrying on as usual, despite knowing you’re part of an arbitrary system - sort of reminiscent of the early punks’ understandings of the sinister “institutions,” eh? After all these years, what still makes punk punk are these internalized feelings of alienation and dispossession, which, with punk bands like Cayetana, are being combated through emotional transcendence rather than generalized aggression... Which is also a movement that self-fulfillingly defines itself as punk simply by subverting its predecessor. This three-piece punk outfit will be having their Tired Eyes EP release show at PhilaMOCA this Saturday accompanied by Mannequin Pussy, a Philly essential who comes from the more aggressive, irreverent side of the punk spectrum, Katie Ellen, a.k.a. The aptly self-styled “shitpunk” bruisers Mannequin Pussy are renowned for their raw, unrestrained performances of piercing tunes that shred your eardrums like sonic cheese graters. Their reckless and unapologetically crass sound situates them alongside bands like Tacocat and Be Your Own Pet, while their outlying softer songs meander toward a more listless indie rock foundation, like something out of the late 80s Creation Records repertoire. But any lapse in the band’s “shitpunk” momentum is easily regained in a live setting, with each ensuing song, usually clocking in between 1-2 minutes, a self-contained noise-bomb of barbed wire and razor blades. Mannequin Pussy will be dishing out the raw power tonight at Hong Kong Garden with The Spirit of the Beehive, another local favorite who will round out the tonal frequency of the night with their low-end fuzz. SOTBH explore the bleak, more brooding side of noise rock and shoegaze, owing its dark but dissipated tonal signature as much to MBV as to Smashing Pumpkins. Their songs show an inclination toward heavy, dissonant riffs, a talent for complex but subtle melody, and a keen sense for song progression that sometimes never looks back or returns to that hook that captured your initial attention. All of this gives the music an indulgent but slightly withholding nature that resembles bands like Swirlies or Jessamine if you gave them a couple of bellowing Marshall stacks. Joining this stacked lineup will be Littler with their uneasy brand of slacker-punk and Tennessee space-rockers Idle Bloom.
