Mannequin Pussy

November 2016
Mannequin Pussy
"Romantic
"
mp3
Mannequin Pussy’s second LP, Romantic, opens without a shred of warning or restraint. Full throttle and in your face, the full-length’s initial statement, “Kiss,” is an anthem of self-care and self-acceptance, whose teeth sink deep into the spine of its listener. Brief but memorable, the song is delectably abrasive, fueled by heart and hunger.

The album’s title track, “Romantic,” is equally fierce, but more melodic. As frontwoman Marisa Dabice’s vocals rise above the tidal crash of swelling riffs and cymbals, it is difficult not to think of Courtney Love circa Live Through This or Kim Gordon’s angst-filled diction on “Drunken Butterfly”. The calm between “Romantic” and “Ten” is momentary before the fast-paced punk balladbarely a minute in length – unfolds, serving in a way as an energetic and impassioned prelude to the nostalgia-laden “Emotional High”. Straightforwardly heartfelt, Romantic’s third offering is like a valentine or text message never sent to the friend that you wish was more than a friend. “I wanted you to know that darling, if you’re lonely, you know what you gotta do, all you gotta do is call.” Dabice sings in a warm tone that later evolves into fervent screams during “Pledge”.

Mannequin Pussy’s ability to transition between melody and dissonance from track to track is mesmerizing, making the poppy hook of “Denial” as effective as the deliberate bombast of “Everything”. An audible coupling of yin and yang, Romantic captures the dark and light side of longing, passion, and love. “Anything,” a probable epilogue for “Everything,” is a grunge-y testament to intimacy and the elusive and ever-changing nature of desire.

“Meatslave One” and “Hey, Steven,” much like the songs that precede them, are anything but coy, confronting listeners with the directness of an unblinking and all-seeing eye. Ending with harmony-laden “Beside Myself,” Romantic’s final moments are much like its first – unshakably fervent and sincere. - Dianca London

New Track: "Romantic" - Mannequin Pussy

Mannequin Pussy frontwoman Marisa Dabice pulls you in with her coy, vulnerable verses, before unleashing a bit of fury in the chorus of "Romantic". The title track from the band's forthcoming album (due out October 28 via Tiny Engines) is brief but poignant. The quartet will be most likely performing this single and many others from the record at PhilaMOCA on Thursday, September 29 opening for Ohio's All Dogs.

New Track: "Emotional High" - Mannequin Pussy

Mannequin Pussy premiered a new track called "Emotional High," over at Noisey yesterday. It's off the band's forthcoming album, Romantic, due out October 28 via Tiny Engines. Frontwoman Marissa Dabice shared some insight about their latest single:

“It’s so genuinely full of warmth because I am appreciative of the people in my life, and I can’t believe they’re there. Sometimes you don’t know how to tell people in your life that you love them, and music is a chance to do that. It’s in such an emotionally dense record it’s this standalone song that’s the most telling of the things you need when you’re in the middle of a bunch of darkness. ‘Emotional High’ is that gratitude for my people song.”

Weekend Warrior, June 10 - 12

Since coming onto the Philly music scene, Mumblr is a band that has been consistently churning out some seriously interesting material. Led by the versatility of frontman Nick Morrison’s vocals, the quartet continues to refine its sound on its newest LP The Never Ending Get Down, which is out today via Austin-based label Fleeting Youth Records. I’m totally rooting for these guys to get more national attention and tours in the near future, and their latest album is sounding like another big step in the right direction. Tomorrow night, you can catch Mumblr tearing through songs from their new record as well as some of their older favorites at PhilaMOCA. It’s a rad lineup in which you also find the blistering “shitpunk” of Mannequin Pussy and the post-something power-gaze of Amanda X. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $10, All Ages - Alexis V.
