Lantern Opening for Disappears at JB’s April 26

It isn’t a surprise that Lantern, Philly “proto-biker-punks,” continue to cultivate a reputation as purveyors of a new aesthetic of rock ‘n’ roll. Blending avant-garde lyricism and Americana-esque chords with the emotive grit of blues and buzzing riffs circa psych’s heydays, each installment of Lantern’s discography stands testament to the three-piece’s knack for dissolving boundaries between genres and their ability to transform pre-existent structures into something audibly new. The result? Transcendent anthems like “Out Of Our Heads” or Dream Mine’s Stooges cover of “I Wanna Be Your Dog.” All fuzz without pretense, the persistent thump of percussion conjures a visceral pulse synonymous with acts like Dead Moon or the buzzing instrumented frustration of slower cuts by Goner darling Nobunny. Lantern sets to further mesmerize the public at JB’s tonight alongside Chicago’s Disappears and Brooklyn’s Man Forever. Rededicate your soul to rock ‘n’ roll. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ - Dianca Potts

Free Download: “Mr. Mars” - Lantern

Lantern just shared a new track that is available for free download called “Mr. Mars” to celebrate their upcoming tour down to SXSW and beyond with Sheer Agony. The band describes the song as “a boogie-fied, Rock ‘N’ Roller inspired by Ziggy era Bowie and Chuck Berry.” It features David Fishkin on sax, and was recorded by Jeff Zeigler at Uniform Recording. Also check out their extensive tour schedule for March HERE

Lantern Ready to Set Things Ablaze at JB's Jan. 17

Lantern, a blast of snarling rock heaven, are headlining tonight at Johnny Brenda’s, along with irately loud Dong Johnson and fierce female pop-punkers Amanda X. Even without their 2012 nod from VICE, their upwards trajectory was cemented by the strength of last year’s Dream Mine, which captivated with its paleo-punk rawness. “Out of Our Heads” blends vintage, Stooges-era thrashing with Zachary Fairbrother’s insouciant vocals, and the ambient noise tracks that stud the album feel more like artistic nods to some of their more Krautrock-y reference points (“Untitled” could be a dirtied-up Can demo) than distracting filler. All in all, a set from Lantern promises enough wattage to power through a citywide blackout. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ - Alyssa Greenberg

New Video: “Evil Eye” - Lantern

Below is live footage of Lantern performing a new song called “Evil Eye” from the upcoming album that they recorded with Uniform Recording’s Jeff Zeigler. It was filmed at Kung Fu Necktie on July 11, 2012, which was their summer tour kick-off show, and features bassist Emily Robb on lead vocals and David Fishkin on baritone sax. Special thanks to Live Philly Concerts’ Chris Thomas for sharing. (Photo by Kyle Costill)

Lantern Tour Kick-off at KFN July 11

Hide your children because the nasty, evil psych-garage rock of Lantern is back, and the trio will be headlining tonight at Kung Fu Necktie. They recently wrapped up work with producer extraordinaire Jeff Zeigler at Uniform Recording finishing up their first full-length album, and this evening will be the kick-off to a string of shows that will conclude in leading shredder Zachary Fairbrother’s former hometown of Montreal, Canada. (You can check out deets for the dates as well as stay abreast of the new release by hitting up their Tumblr and/or Facebook.) They will also have new drummer in tow. Lantern will be joined this evening by Dong Johnson (consisting of members who perform with Blood Feathers, Ted Leo and The Apostles) and Streetwalkers (who just returned from shows with The Men). Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $8, 21+ - Q.D. Tran

Lantern Drops Tape Reissue via Night People!

Lantern just dropped a rad tape reissue today entitled Burned Youth via Night People. It was recorded in Musquodobit Harbour NS, Montreal QC, Bethlehem CT and Philadelphia, PA. You can take a listen below and purchase its digital version HERE. Enjoy!
