The Deli Philly’s New Year’s Eve Show Roundup

There is too much great local music happening tonight that you can’t possibly cover and see it all. Here’s a roundup of some shows that you should be at to ring in the New Year this evening. A hot one will be newly signed to Saddle Creek, Hop Along, at Johnny Brenda’s for a sold-out show with Thin Lips and roses. The group recently wrapped up its stint in the studio where they’ve been working on their next label album with producer John Agnello (Kurt Vile, Dinosaur Jr., etc.) so there should be plenty of new material. Philly indie-rock mainstays Man Man, opening for Gogol Bordello at the E Factory, should be a fantastic show. Our friends at PhilaMOCA will be hosting Mannequin Pussy and the Jawbreaker reunion. A Sunny Day in Glasgow are capping off their holiday run at Boot & Saddle. Shaky Jake and his Killer Bangs crew are taking over Kung Fu Necktie with psych outfit Drone Ranger and stoner metalheads Ruby the Hatchet. And take some swings at batting cages/DIY music space Everybody Hits with The Spirit of the Beehive and Mike Bell & The Movies. And the list goes on and on… Share how you’re spending your NYE?

Residuels & Killer Bangs Opening for The Detroit Cobras at JB’s Jan. 23

Coming out from behind a veil of pot smoke, you’ll find Killer Bangs unleashing some good time rock ‘n’ roll from below the waist. The band, fronted by “Shakey” Jake Hammill (formerly of Cold Fronts) and his brother Dylan Hammill with Stephen Clifford (Circa Survive) on drums and Chris Wehy (The Makes) on guitar, will be kicking out their party anthems at Johnny Brenda’s tonight for the first time. They’ll be warming up the stage for the garage-psych explosions of Residuels, who are made up of Moon Women frontman Justin Pittney and Creepoid drummer Pat Troxell, who also scares small children as lead screamer in noisy hardcore outfit Heathen Reign. Closing the evening out will be garage rock cover band The Detroit Cobras. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $15, 21+ - Alexis V.

New Music Video: "I Was Born on Christmas" - Killer Bangs

Call us Scrooges, but we generally hate Christmas songs. However, when they come with a music video featuring Jesus Christ and Santa Claus dancing, limboing, drinking and smoking pot, we guess that we can make an exception. Here's a new one from Killer Bangs, the latest project from Shakey Jake (ex-Cold Fronts), for the band's single "I Was Born on Christmas." Their third official video was directed by Roe Jennings. We guess that it's never too early to celebrate the Son of God's bday.

New Music Video: "Mojito Overflow" - Killer Bangs

Here's a new music video from Killer Bangs for their debut single "Mojito Overflow." The band consists of former Cold Fronts member Shaky Jake and Dylan Hammill, and the video features cameos from Circa Survive's Stephen Clifford and Ruby The Hatchet's Jillian Taylor. Killer Bangs will be making their live performance debut by taking on a residency at Kung Fu Necktie that will span the Thursdays on October 10, 17 and 24. The group promises "all the guitar attraction and pop-sensibilities of Cold Fronts with more rock & roll integrity." We think them sound like a fightin' words.
