Mercy Lounge Announces Lineup for 10th Anniversary Party

Next Friday and Saturday nights, on January 11th and 12th, Mercy Lounge will celebrate its 10th birthday in true Cannery Row fashion, throwing a party that will span all three venues. On Friday night, you can catch JEFF the Brotherhood, Tristen, Wild Cub, and RiCHiE, and on Saturday, performers will include Cherub, Ravello, The Weeks, and Machines Are People Too. With three stages to fill, more performers will be announced within the coming week via Twitter and Facebook.

If you're broke or just the type to arrive empty handed at parties, Mercy Lounge has your cover covered. On both nights, the first 250 people through the door will get in for free. After that, tickets are $10 for one night or $15 for both and can be purchased here (for night one), here (for night two), or at Grimey's New and Preloved Music, The Groove Record Shop, and Parlour & Juke Salon.

In addition to the full bars in Mercy Lounge, Cannery Ballroom, and the High Watt, both shows are presented in part by Yuengling and Brooklyn Brewery.

JEFF the Brotherhood Debut Video for "Leave Me Out"

In the video for their newest single, "Leave Me Out," JEFF the Brotherhood spared no expense. From artistic shots of glittering oceans to motorcross crossfades, this video has it all. Watch Jake and Jamin perform their latest release from Hypnotic Nights in front of a hilariously (and probaby purposefully) terrible green screen.

Review: Monkey Bowl, “Space”

What does Bob Something, aka Robert Ellis Orrall, do? Whatever the hell he wants. His one-man solo project, Monkey Bowl, released its third eclectic pop album, Space, last July on Plastic 350 Records along with Art CircusApples & Oranges and the little bear’s eponymous release. Space, not an album to be pigeonholed, is a diverse, mellow, lyric-driven record that outfits accessible pop in various masks from soft and acoustic (“And You Were a Spaceship,” “For the Hard Days Ahead”) to bright and sparkling (“She’s Got a Smile That Wakes Up the Sun, The World Comes Alive, Put Your Shades On!”).

Orrall, a hit songwriter many times over, writes simply, candidly and classically. On Space, he sings about love, the importance of secrets, spaceships and needing space with a warm, non-abrasive voice not unlike Elvis Costello’s that floats over instrumentation done by himself and several contributors.

The 12-track collection features a rendition of “Ten Nine Eight Seven Six Five Four,” which is on labelmate Art Circus’ Apples & Oranges as well as a hushed, softer rendition of JEFF the Brotherhood’s “The Tropics” that has a delicate piano base. The record leans heavily on piano hooks, like “The Secret Life of Secrets,” and one of the best is the distinct outlier, even on this mish-mash album, “You All,” with its wiry guitar and retro pop rhythm.

As with all Monkey Bowl output, Space is a multiform assortment of words and melodies that happened to strike the fancy of Bob Something, which is precisely the appeal; the variety of the record is its charm.

Two Teasers for the Road, Courtesy Of JEFF the Brotherhood

Great news to all fans of the Nashville duet: There's not long left to wait before the release of JEFF the Brotherhood's new material, and to tease us a touch more, they’ve just revealed the upcoming album’s cover art. Cool, right? Out on the 17th of July, this most anticipated seventh record, Hypnotic Nights, explores further the psychedelic edge of The Brotherhood’s sound, although rest assured, it is as catchy, alive, and fuzzy as ever before-- maybe more summer-adequate even-- so y’all can get ready to rock out! Meanwhile, after a series of shows with L.A.’s Best Coast, the band are back on the roads again for a headlining tour, with over 20 dates across the U.S.

Now, to the slightly more impatient ones always waiting for something to leak over the web, here’s something for you (and the hint is right there in the title): Three of the four tracks featured on the Hypnotic Knights EP will figure on the forthcoming album of the same name... and there’s your teaser number two! -- Tracy Mamoun
