Noise is not a stranger in NYC, whether you are referring to the city's ambient sound or its musical counterpart. The latter is - more often than not - generated by distorted guitars, fuzz pedals, and seemingly out of control electric guitarists. Jenny Tuite's band Dirty Dishes inserts itself in this coltish rock tradition, which gave us unforgettably turbulent recordings by bands like the Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth and A Place To Bury Strangers. A skilled guitarist, Jenny is borderline obsessed with stompboxes, and had no problem sharing with our friends at Delicious Audio some effect related tricks she pulls off when making noise with her band.

Slacking noise lovers shouldn't miss this show at Shea Stadium on 05.05, since it features threee NYC bands with a noisy sound and a slacking attitude. Post-hardcore quartet Big Ups - our Best NYC Emerging Band of 2014 - will headline the bill and kick off a three date north east tour in support of their recent release 'Before a Million Universes.'  Their label mates, slacker rockers Washer will be one of the opening acts; after releasing a split EP with Big Ups in 2014, this past January released their debut album 'Here Comes Washer.' on the bill also noise rock purveyors Dirty Dishes, who recently expanded to a trio (picture) and released a new single in February entitled "All of Me" (streaming) and spent the early spring touring the East coast.

Noisy duo-plus-drummer Dirty Dishes, who moved from LA to NYC in 2015, just released this video for single "Thank You Come Again," which definitely betrays influences from the loud/quiet/loud sound of the best Nirvana songs. If you are into cathartic, dyonisiac music, this is definitely something you want to experience live: the band will be playing Shea Stadium on February 4th, and then venture for an extensive west coast tour starting February 16.

The Deli NYC welcomes LA's Dirty Dishes to the "lot" of land we call our "covered area." The noise rock duo settled in Brooklyn a few weeks ago, after releasing their latest full length 'Guilty' on Exploding in Sound Records earlier in 2015. Active since 2010, this is a band that will certainly find a lot of supporters in their new borough's DIY circuit, brimming with lovers of dissonance, fuzz and loud live performances. NYC seems a rather appropriate home for Dirty Dishes, since their sound is obviously following on the footsteps of Sonic Youth and other pioneers of the noise rock movement - in this regard, check out single 'Red Roulette,' streaming, and album opener 'Thank You Come Again.' This being said, the duo has always cultivated also a mellower, at times almost ambient side, which inspired songs like 'Androginous Love Song' and 'Dan Cortez' among others. The band just ended a US tour, we are looking forward to their first home show in NYC!

Boston based dream-poppers Dirty Dishes have released a 5-track album “The Most Tarnished Birds” in both physical and download format, and can be gotten directly from their bandcamp. Consisting of five single word song titles, “Gaze” opens with sparse instrumentation, focusing momentarily on Jenny Tuite's expressive voice, before exploding into a powerful wall of guitars and layered dreamy vocals. “Bloom” follows a similarly structured introductory pattern, before alternating between sweet female vocals and frenetic musical interludes reminiscent of Sonic Youth, although Collen’s voice leans more towards the smoother textures of Kim Deal, rather than Ms. Gordon’s husky rasp. “Break” exhibits more complex rhythms via syncopated drumming against an open note guitar pattern, while “Blur” channels the pure sonic guitar force of My Bloody Valentine, with vocals not nearly as murky. The band will be playing The Middle East Upstairs in Cambridge, MA on August 5, and Glasslands Gallery in Brooklyn the following night. - Dave Cromwell
