Deli Portland gems to dominate the Doug Fir for record release

The Doug Fir will be host to a lineup comprised of some the Deli's Portland's most prized artists tomorrow. The Cabin Project are having their record release show for the new Unfolded, joined by Deli Portland Artist of the Year for 2015 Coco Columbia and the instrumentally dynamic and colorful Human Ottoman.

The orchestral pop of The Cabin Project boasts grand choruses and harmonies paired with scopic string sections, manifesting a desirably mellow affect that landed them the runner up slot in the Deli's Year End polls. Katie Sawicki, the Brooklynite that founded The Cabin Project, developed her vision over the last near decade by injecting an intimacy of poetically heartfelt lyrics paired with a musical output that's just as affectionate. Now joined by Zanny Geffel and Rebekah Hanson, The Cabin Project's full sound translates into an ornate projection on all members' innermost emotions.

Unfolded is the third release from The Cabin Project and promises to be the most sentimental yet. "[Unfolded is] an album about despair, loss, hope, freedom, heartache, justice and love.  We hope that our listeners will connect with the words and feelings of this record and believe that it is catharsis for all who have felt these universal feelings within their own journeys through life," the band states on album's intent.

Coco Columbia's angelic jazz pop fills an empty pocket in Portland's rock dominated music scene, while Human Ottoman's revived take on the typical instrumental makeup of a band (using only a cello, vibraphone and drums) is sonically raucous.

An album stream for The Cabin Project's Unfolded will be available on the Deli Portland site before the release show tomorrow, so be sure to familiarize yourself before you see it live at this Deli endorsed event.

Come fool around at tonight's hip hop house show

Not fool around as in hook up with people...unless you want to. That's your own prerogative. I'm talking April Fools, which is today. This show, however, is not a joke. Korgy and Bass, Eric Fury and Coco Columbia will all be blasting their ecclectic and addictive beats in the basement space at the Dacha tonight for $5. Come out and bob your head a little bit. Or maybe even pull a Busta Rhymes and break ya' neck. Whatever you choose to do, it'll be fun. Just keep the pranking to a minimum, we're all adults here. -Cervante Pope

PREMIERE: Coco Columbia - "Weight on Limb"

We've got another new track to share with you today at the Deli, and it's from our most pleasantly animated solo artist Coco Columbia. "Weight on Limb" is the first track off her upcoming album When the Birds Begin to Walk due out this summer. Inspired by underground poppy jazz and soul hits, the rhythmically intriguing "Weight on Limb" features layered arrangements that not only pique you interest but keep you hanging on their every movement. Coco Columbia worked with Sacha Miller on the engineering and production of the track and will continue to collaborate on the rest of the album together, so we can look forward to When the Birds Begin to Walk being just as masterful.

A single release show for "Weight on Limb" is happening tomorrow, March 9th at the Goodfoot. A music video will also be out soon, but until then, enjoy below.

Smoking Surgeon to release You Play Music Like A Girl compilation

Recently launched PDX label Smoking Surgeon is preparing to release its first compilation, You Play Music Like A Girl, just before the holiday hits. Don't let the title upset you though, Portland. The main focus of the compilation is to spotlight Portland's various female-inclusive acts, attempting to counteract the phrase's negative connotation in a satirical and talented way, bringing new life to the phrase.

...Like A Girl will feature some of the city's finest in fem power, from bassists and guitarists to keyboardists and songwriters. Vocalists, too. Enjoy the sounds of locals Old Wave, Haley Heynderickx, Coco Columbia and Pony Village on the comp, plus many more.

A release show will be held in celebration of its launch at the Liquor Store on December 22nd. Playing the show will be Lubec, The Century and Moniker with entrance only being $5. Just so you know, $8 will get you entry plus a copy of the comp!

Smoking Surgeon Records was bred by lovely lady musician Emma Browne and Justin Chase, who happened to come from a home of musically inclined women. Aside from a mutual passion and respect for women in music, the two also share the stage as part of the band Rare Diagram. Both in the band and as a record label, the two only manifest a greatness worthy of all our attention.
