The Bad Doctors

Weekend Warrior, July 10 - 12

Tonight, Underground Arts (specifically the cozy confines of the Black Box) will be abuzz as a trio of local acts revs up the audience for tonight’s headliner. That initial sky-rocketing blast will be detonated by Harsh Vibes, whose cosmic journey plays in fuzzed-out long form. They stretch sonic waves to allow those noisy particles to methodically gather momentum and fortitude, while maintaining a steady course and exploring unknown regions, only to seamlessly transition into a higher gear in the optimal setting. It’s a powerful-meets-purposeful head-trip. After just sharing a few new demos, the propulsive synth- driven, creeping wave of The Bad Doctors will rouse you to your feet, although you may want to occasionally peer over your shoulder. Meanwhile, the get-loose, surf-garage rock of The Tough Shits retain a gritty spirit, producing the type of songs that you’ll replay in your head throughout the weekend. They’ll be bridging the divide to the heavy plunge of California psych-garage outfit Meatbodies. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 8pm, $12, 21+ - Michael Colavita

The Bad Doctors Opening for Thee Oh Sees at Underground Arts Nov. 17

Tonight’s show at Underground Arts is definitely one that I said to myself when I first saw it on the calendar: “Oh, why the fuck does this have to be on a Monday night?!” One of my favorite bands Thee Oh Sees are back in town, and though they’ll be returning as a different configuration, John Dwyer and crew will surely provide a signature amped up performance. For local support, synth-punks The Bad Doctors will be gettin’ the crowd warmed up. Armed with an arsenal of material from their latest LP Burning City (FDH Records), the energy level will be set to full throttle from the get go. Drag City’s Jack Name, a.k.a. White Fence’s touring guitarist John Webster John, will be the psych-pop filling to this rockin’ sandwich for the evening. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 8pm, $18, 21+ - Alexis V.

Weekend Warrior, August 22 - 24

Tonight, fittingly The Bad Doctors kick off a run of tour dates at The Pharmacy. In support of their latest LP Burning City (FDH Records), The Bad Doctors perform dance-inspiring electro-synth foundational tunes, pulled from the poorly lit shadowy corners of the mind, giving the racing-through-the-side-streets vibe an added heart-thumping appeal to urgency. While you’re prone to cautiously look over your shoulder, post-punk trio Psychic Teens is hard at work on their next full-length LP, the follow-up to COME, and will be playing some new tunes this evening. Psychic Teens ooze an authoritative, agitated, buzz-saw sound that demands one’s full attention. The duo of Wes Russell and Shari Vari (Void Vision) team up as Hot Guts, comfortably fitting on this bill with their menacing brand of post industrial-wave and a new record Wilds set for release this fall via Avant! Records. The Pharmacy (1300/02 S. 18th St.), 7pm, $7, All Ages - Michael Colavita

New Bad Doctors LP Available for Streaming

The Bad Doctors have always had their synth-leanings to 80’s new wave. However, on the group’s latest LP Burning City, available via FDH Records, they have fully embraced the more danceable side of the genre, while still maintaining the edginess that had made them local basement favorites. You can stream the record in its entirety below.

The Bad Doctors Record Release Show at The Boot & Saddle May 16

The new-wave punk-injected West Philly trio known as The Bad Doctors celebrates the release of their first full-length entitled Burning City (FDH Records) tonight at The Boot and Saddle. The group performs synth-laden, danceable music embedded with a more serious closer to the surface attitude concentrated in the heavy deep tones found in Matt McDermott’s vocals. The Bad Doctors work that tug of war push-pull found between joy and darkness and release and reality. They will be joined on the bill this evening by recent Deli Featured Artist(s) Poll Winners future/primitive whose self-titled 12’’ is a steady churning blend of jagged, stabbing guitars, steady thumping back-end and assertive, serious/raw-coated vocals. Synth-punk hybrid and fellow FDH Records labelmates SGNLS round out the night’s lineup. The Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 8pm, $10, 21+ - Michael Colavita
